Oh Jenifer!

I spent this weekend teaching my Catalan sister-in-law how to make fideuà. Yes, that is right. An American teaching a Catalan woman how to make a dish from Valencia. I love it! It's like a Spanish person teaching an American how to make a hamburger. But, this is not my point, though I know I'm gloating here. 

My point is that after our meal, my two sisters-in-law belted out Jenifer, a song by Els Catarres. The sat on the couch bellowing, "Ohh Jenifer, em tunnejaré el cotxe per tu!"  I was immediately hooked to the song. The song is hilarious because it is about a young male person and his strong Catalan identification at odds with the young gal he falls in love with called, Jenifer. 

The punch line is how he brags about being so cultured, but falls in love with someone without culture because love prevails class and education (sadly some names like Jennifer, Vanessa, Johnny, etc., in Spain connote lack of genteelness).

Jenifer is a choni, lives in Castelldefels, and presumably loves customized cars like in MTV's Pimp My Ride. I have a Catalan girl friend who loves coxtes tunejat, and has a name with seven letters--five of the seven are vowels, but that doesn't make her a choni, so take that Els Catarres! 

I have to admit that the lyrics are funny, I got a real kick out of them. The video however, is a let down. They should have been true to their lyrics and made a video equally as humorous as their song. Visca les chonies!! 

p.s. choni disparagingly refers to a vulgar woman with no class--kind of like saying "She's so ghetto."
